India coal demand and production gap 185.50 million tonne

 

As per the XII Five Year Plan, the gap between the projected demand and the domestic production of coal the terminal year 2016-17 is estimated to be 185.50 million tonnes.

This information was given by Mr Pratik Prakashbapu Patil minister of State of Coal in a written reply in Lok sabha on November 27th 2012.

The projected domestic production is 795 million tonnes as per the optimistic scenario assessed by the Working Group for formulation of the XII Five Year Plan.

Mr Patil said that "It is proposed to secure the supplies both through domestic production as well as import. For enhancing domestic production a number of new projects in public sector coal companies have been proposed to be taken up during the XII Plan."

He said that "Besides a number of captive blocks are also envisaged to contribute in enhancing the production in the XII Plan."

He added that "A little amount of coal has been exported to neighboring countries for several years."

However, the total expenditure incurred on import of coal during the last three years is approximately INR 15,95,672.
